ab kya bole, kya likhe, aur kya baat kare,
ki har baat ko be-baat kiye jaati hai teri baate !!

har alfaaz jo tere labo se nikla, humne sar kiya
hume pasand na aayi, nahi aisi koi teri baate !!

mujh pe tohmat na rakh gar khata hui mujhse,
ki ek khata yoon bhi kiye jaati hai teri baate !!

Namaazi mein, Sharaabi mein

kabhi na bhool sakuNga shab-e-firaaq wo meiN
sharaab peene se yaadeN sadaa jawaan rahe!

namaaz pehle to do ghoNT pii hi lene do
ye be-Khudii hi ibaadat meiN jaise jaan rahe!

namaaz baad dobaara do ghoNT pii hii lii,
ya Khuda! baad-e-ibaadat bhi kuch to dhyaan rahe!

mirii namaaz thi bas chaar ghoNT botal ke
magar ye baat humaare hi darmiyaan rahe!

ki choor choor ho ab yooN sharaab ke nashe meN,
kadam jameeN pe ho na sar pe aasmaan rahe !!

ye utaregii na khumari kabhi merii jaana,
utar gayii jo 'rja' mujhme fir na jaan rahe !!

PS: Thanks to Imran for meter correction in this piece of GHAZAL, finally i can call it a Ghazal, though matla is still missing, but radif, kaafiya, maqta and behar(except the 1st line of 2nd last verse) are there.

Miir Taqi Miir

You must have heard of the "Maine poocha chand se ke dekha hai kahin mera yaar sa haseen" from Hindi Movie ABDULLAH, sung by MOHAMMAD RAFI.
Later in the songe a line comes that says:
"Khoobsurati jo tune paayi,
lut gayi khuda ki bas khudaayi,
meer ke ghazal kahun tujhe main,
ya kahun khaiyyaam ki rubaayi"
Ever wondered why meer(or Miir)???

Mir (b. 1723 - d. 1810), whose original name was Mohammed Taqi and takhallus was Mir (sometimes also spelled as Meer Taqi Meer), often remembered as Khuda-e-Sukhan meaning God of poetry. His complete work, Kulliaat, consist of 6 diwans, containing 13,585 couplets comprising all kinds of poetic forms: ghazal, masnavi, qasida, rubai, mustezaad, satire, etc. Some of Mir's ghazals:



hastii apanii hubaab kii sii hai
ye numaaish saraab kii sii hai

naazukii us ke lab kii kyaa kahiye
pa.nkha.Dii ik gulaab kii sii hai

baar baar us ke dar pe jaataa huu.N

In Lata Mangeshkar's voice "Dikhai Diye Yoon Ke Bekhud Kiya" from Hindi movie Bazaar(1982) is a very beautiful songs that is very famous among old hindi-oldies-listeners. It's a Ghazal and originally total 9 verse was written by Miir in the Ghazal.

Hazrat Amiir Khusrow

I believe most of Hindi-Movie viewers have heard the song "jhooth kapat chhal keeni re, mose naina milaaiike" from movie Saathiya starring Raani Mukharji and Vivek Oberoy. And people, who likes to listen Oldies from Bollywood, might have heard "Zeehaal-e-miskeen makun ba-ranjish, bahaal-e-hizraan bechara dil hai" from movie Ghulami starring Dharmendra, Mithun, Smita Patil. Here is a piece of Info about all these.

jhooth kapat chhal keeni, re mose naina milaaiike" is a derived or modified version of "Chhap tilak sab cheeni ray mosay naina milaikay" originally written by Khusrow.

You've taken away my looks, my identity, by just a glance.

By making me drink the wine of love-potion,

I give my life to you, Oh my cloth-dyer,
You've dyed me in yourself, by just a glance.

I give my whole life to you Oh, Nijam,
You've made me your bride, by just a glance.


Ab'ul Hasan Yamiin al-Diin Khusrow (1253-1325 CE), better known as Amiir Khusrow Dehlawii, Pen-name 'Khusrow' was an iconic figure in the cultural history of the Indian subcontinent. A Sufi mystic and a spiritual disciple of Nizamuddin Auliya of Delhi, and father of Qwwali(a singing style), Sitar and Tabla.



Kaahay ko biyaahi bides, ray, lakhi baabul moray,

Bhayiyon ko diye babul mehlay do-mehlay,
Hum ko diya pardes, ray, lakhi babul......

Hum to hain babul teray khoontay ki gayyan,
Jid haankay hank jaayen, ray, lakhi babul......

Hum to hain babul teray belay ki kaliyan,
Ghar ghar maangi jaayen, ray lakhi babul......

Hum to hain babul teray pinjray ki chidiyan,
Bhor bhaye ud jaayen, ray, lakhi babul......

Taaqon bhari mainay gudiyan jo chhodeen
Choota sahelin ka saath, ray lakhi babul......

Kothay talay say palakiya jo nikli,
Beeran nay khaayi pachhad, ray, lakhi babul.....

Dolee ka parda uthakar jo dekha,

English Translation:

Why did you part me from yourself, dear father, why?

You’ve given houses with two stories to my brothers,
And to me, a foreign land? Why dear father, why?

We (daughters) are just cows tied to your peg,
Will move on to where ever you drive us to, dear father.

We are just flower-buds of your garden,
And are asked for, in every household, dear father.

We are just birds from your cage,
Will fly off when its dawn again, dear father.

I’ve left at home, alcoves full of dolls;
And parted from my buddies too, dear father.

When my palanquin passed beneath the terrace,
My brother fainted and fell, dear father.

As I remove the curtain from the palanquin,
I see we’ve reached the beloved’s house, dear father.


Though less famous, "Kahe Ko Byahi Bides" sung by Jagjiit Kaur with music of Khaiyyam, from movie Umrao Jaan(1981) starring Rekha, was also written by Khusrow. One more song from the same poet which is perhaps in the movie 'Bandit Queen' and can be heard in north indian wedding ceremonies as well, "Amman meray baba ko bhaijo ri - Ke saavan ayaa".

English Translation:

Dear Mom, send my dad across; the rainy season has come.
[Oh, dear daughter, how can I?] Your dad's too old; the rainy season has come.
Dear Mom, send my brother across; the rainy season has come.
[Oh, dear daughter, how can I?] Your brother's too young; the rainy season has come.
Dear Mom, send my uncle across; the rainy season has come.
[Oh, dear daughter, how can I?] Your uncle's too dandy; the rainy season has come.


The phrase "Zeehaal-e-miskeen" comes from a poem of Amir Khusrau. The unique thing about this poem is that it is a macaronic, written in Persian and Brij Bhasha. In the first verse, the first line is in Persian, the second in Brij Bhasha, the third in Persian again, and the fourth in Brij Bhasha. In the remaining verses, the first two lines are in Persian, the last two in Brij Bhasha. The poem showcases Amir Khusrau's mastery over both languages.



Zeehaal-e miskeen makun taghaful, duraye naina banaye batiyan;
ki taab-e hijran nadaram ay jaan, na leho kaahe lagaye chhatiyan.

Shaban-e hijran daraz chun zulf, wa roz-e waslat cho umr kotah;
Sakhi piya ko jo main na dekhun, to kaise kaatun andheri ratiyan.

Yakayak az dil do chashm-e jadoo, basad farebam baburd taskin;
Kise pari hai jo jaa sunaave, piyare pi ko hamaari batiyan.

Cho shama sozan cho zarra hairan, hamesha giryan be ishq aan meh;
Na neend naina na ang chaina, Na aap aaven na bhejen patiyan.

Bahaqq-e roz-e wisal-e dilbar, ki daad mara ghareeb Khusrau;
Sapet man ke waraaye raakhun, jo jaaye paaon piya ke khatiyan.


English Translation:

Do not overlook my misery by blandishing your eyes, and weaving tales;
My patience has over-brimmed, O sweetheart, why do you not take me to your bosom.

Long like curls in the night of separation, short like life on the day of our union;
My dear, how will I pass the dark dungeon night without your face before.

Suddenly, using a thousand tricks, the enchanting eyes robbed me of my tranquil mind;
Who would care to go and report this matter to my darling?

Tossed and bewildered, like a flickering candle, I roam about in the fire of love;
Sleepless eyes, restless body, neither comes she, nor any message.

In honour of the day I meet my beloved, who has lured me so long, O Khusrau;
I shall keep my heart suppressed, if ever I get a chance to get to her trick.

Dr. Iqbal

Few songs that are common in Indian schools as prayer or nursery rhymes, yet very few people know the name of the poet.

One of them is "Lab Pe Aati Hai", written by Dr. ALLAMA IQBAL (Real Name : Muhammad Iqbal, November 9, 1877 – April 21, 1938), A political activist, A social reformer, Rising up to his social responsibility, his calling at a critical phase of history.



Lab pe aati hai dua banke tamanna meri,
Zindagi shamma ki surat ho khudaya meri.

Door duniya ka mere dam se andhera hojaye,
Har jagah mere chamakne se ujala hojaye.

ho mere dam se unhi mere watan ki zeenat,
Jis tarha phool se hoti hai chaman ki zeenat.

Zindagi ho meri parwane ki surat ya RAB,
Ilm ki shamma se ho mujhko mohabbat ya RAB.

Ho mera kaam garibon ki himayat karna,
Dardmando se zaifo se mohabbat karna.

Mere ALLAH burai se bachana mujhko,
Neak jo rah he us reh pe chalana mujhko.


English Translation of "Lab pe aati hai"....

My longing comes to my lips assupplication of mine,
ALLAH ! may like the candle the life of mine.

My presence would destroy the darkness of this world,
And my burning light would illuminate all space.

May my homeland through me attain elegance,
As the garden through flowers attains elegance.

May my life like that of the moth be O LORD !
May i love the lamp of knowledge O LORD !

May supportive of the poor my life's way be ,
May loving the old, the suffring my way be.

O ALLAH ! protect me from the evil ways,
Show me the path leading to the good ways.


By the same poet, "Saare Jahan Se Achchha" is one of the enduring patriotic poems of the Urdu language. Written originally for children in the Ghazal style of Urdu poetry. Also known as Tarana-e-Hindi, "Anthem of the People of Hindustan".



Saare jahaan se achchaa hindostaan hamaaraa,
ham bulbulen hain us kii vuh gulsitaan hamaaraa.

Ghurbat men hon agar ham, rahtaa hai dil vatan men,
samjho vuhiin hamen bhii dil ho jahaan hamaaraa.

Parbat vuh sab se oonchaa, hamsaayah aasmaan kaa,
vuh santarii hamaaraa, vuh paasbaan hamaaraa.

Godii men kheltii hain us kii hazaaron nadiyaan,
gulshan hai jin ke dam se rashk-e janaan hamaaraa.

Ay aab-rood-e gangaa! vuh din hain yaad tujh ko?
utaraa tere kinaare jab kaaravaan hamaaraa.

Mazhab nahiin sikhaataa aapas men bair rakhnaa,
hindii hain ham, vatan hai hindostaan hamaaraa.

Yoonaan-o-misr-o-rumaa sab miṭ gaye jahaan se,
ab tak magar hai baaqii naam-o-nishaan hamaaraa.

Kuchh baat hai kih hastii mittii nahiin hamaarii,
sadiyon rahaa hai dushman daur-e zamaan hamaaraa.

Iqbaal! koyii maḥram apnaa nahiin jahaan men,
maaloom kyaa kisii ko dard-e nihaan hamaaraa!


English Translation of "Saare jahan se achchha"....

Better than the entire world, is our Hindustan,
We are its nightingales, and it (is) our garden abode

If we are in an alien place, the heart remains in the homeland,
Know us to be only there where our heart is.

That tallest mountain, that shade-sharer of the sky,
(It) is our sentry, (it) is our watchman.

In its lap frolic those thousands of rivers,
Whose vitality makes our garden the envy of Paradise.

O the flowing waters of the Ganges, do you remember that day,
When our caravan first disembarked on your waterfront?

Religion does not teach us to bear ill-will among ourselves
We are of Hind, our homeland is Hindustan.

In a world in which ancient Greece, Egypt, and Rome have all vanished without trace
Our own attributes (name and sign) live on today.

Such is our existence that it cannot be erased
Even though, for centuries, the cycle of time has been our enemy.

Iqbal! We have no confidant in this world
What does any one know of our hidden pain?

Hum kaha pahunche


hum bhi chale the manjil ko dekhiye ab kaha pahunche !!
har mod par kaamyaab hi pahunche hum jaha pahunche !!

nikle the ghar se baandh ke sar pe kafan, teri rahguzar par
ab jis mod pe zindagi le aayi hai najaane hum kaha pahunche !!

naa majil ki khabar ya raaste ka pata na humsafar koi
meri dua'o me itna asar kaha ki vo tere yaha pahunche, !!

agar manzil ki bas ek jhalak mil jaaye mujhe, E khuda
raaste khud-ba-khud ban jaaye, kadam jaha pahunche !!
