avadhu, maya taji na aai - kabir

अवधू, माया तजी न आई ।

गिरह तज के बस्तर बांधा, बस्तर तज के फेरी ।

काम तजे तें क्रोध न जाई, क्रोध तजे तें लोभा ।

लोभ तजे अहँकार न जाई, मान-बड़ाई-सोभा ।

मन बैरागी माया त्यागी, शब्द में सुरत समाई ।

कहैं कबीर सुनो भाई साधो, यह गम बिरले पाई ॥ --1-63

Tell me, Brother, how can I renounce Maya?
When I gave up the tying of ribbons, still I tied my garment about me.
[--When I gave up tying my garment, still I covered my body in its folds.]
So, when I give up passion, I see that anger remains; And when I renounce anger, greed is with me still.
And when greed is vanquished, pride and vainglory remain.
When the mind is detached and casts Maya away, still it clings to the letter.
Kabir says, "Listen to me, dear Sadhu!  the true path is rarely found."

In the line:
गिरह तज के बस्तर बांधा, बस्तर तज के फेरी ।

गिरह is not the urdu word meaning 'knot'. It is the apbhransh of the Samskrit word गृह meaning 'home'. The word फेरी is the Hindi word meaning to go around, or to move about (example, फेरी लगाना). फेरी is supposed to be the job of फकीर. So the first line means:
I collected my bedroll and relinquished home. Then I gave up my bedroll and became an ascetic. (मैंने घर छोड़ कर बिस्तर बाँध लिए. फिर बिस्तर भी छोड़ कर फकीरी करने लगा.)

अवधू, माया तजी न आई । Hey man, you still not find a way to renounce Maya.

गिरह तज के बस्तर बांधा, बस्तर तज के फेरी । From home to homelessness you wondered

काम तजे तें क्रोध न जाई, क्रोध तजे तें लोभा । but greed, anger, desire still exist in you

लोभ तजे अहँकार न जाई, मान-बड़ाई-सोभा । Also ego has not vanished

मन बैरागी माया त्यागी, शब्द में सुरत समाई । Looks, my mind have found a way and I renounced Maya completely within and found a letter that have true face.

कहैं कबीर सुनो भाई साधो, यह गम बिरले पाई ॥ --1-63 Listen o people, after mind dead, pain in love very few have found out.

Kabir in last line saying what Buddha has said. He saying the the root of गम found. That is the same root which Buddha term as suffering, दुःख।
The main translation in original post by admin, is a work of Ravindranath Tagore. He got award for this. But I know the translations are not accurate. So, see the example of mine translation. There are many more poems of kabir got mitranslated.

Thanks for an enlightening discussion. My attempt at the translation is as follows:....

However much I tried, I found that it is not easy to renounce Maya. I left home and lived only with my bedroll. Then, I left bedroll too and became an ascetic. But even when I renounced desires, the anger still remained. When I renounced anger, greed still lingered on. Greed went but ego persisted and vainglory, yet, remained with me.
After walking a path full of such innumerable struggles, He blessed me with a detached heart, vanquished maya and gave me awareness in each word and breath. Kabir says that rarely does someone get such deep yearning to be able to walk this strenuous path and meet Him.

In the last line, the word gum is used in an ironic manner, and refers to vairagya, which in fact internally is opposite to sorrow. The said great position of vairgaya s attained by very rare persons.
